Blick Mead: A Sacred Landscape Under Threat

Yesterday, we took a journey into the heart of ancient Britain as we gathered at Blick Mead spring for a ceremony organised by River Blessings. Amidst the serene beauty of this sacred landscape, we gave our prayers and offerings to honour this sacred landscape and the spirits of place.

Blick Mead holds a pivotal place in the story of Britain's ancient past. As the birthplace of Stonehenge, it has witnessed the footsteps of mesolithic peoples who gathered here over ten thousand years ago. This natural spring, with its mystical allure and life-giving waters, served as a nexus of human activity long before the iconic stone circles and henges were erected nearby.

Yet, despite its profound historical and spiritual significance, Blick Mead finds itself under threat. The government's plans for a tunnel and expressway near Stonehenge pose a dire risk to this fragile archaeological site and others in the connected landscape. The proposed scheme threatens to irreversibly damage the delicate ecosystem of Blick Mead, losing important archaeological evidence that would tell us more about our story and history, and disrupt the sacred rhythms of the land.

Archaeologists and conservationists alike have voiced strong opposition to the tunnel scheme, citing concerns about the potential destruction of irreplaceable heritage sites and the loss of invaluable archaeological evidence. At Blick Mead, where ongoing excavations continue to uncover new insights into our ancient past, the stakes are particularly high. Each layer of earth holds untold stories of human endeavor and ingenuity, waiting to be unearthed and shared for future generations.

In response to these looming threats, we gathered at Blick Mead with offerings of flowers and sacred waters, calling on the spirits of place and standing in solidarity with the land. Our prayers were given to the waters, seeking the strength and guidance of the ancient guardians who watch over this sacred landscape. As we walked along the waters edge and conversed with the spirits of the land, we felt a profound sense of connection to the past and a renewed determination to protect the legacy of our ancestors.

Blick Mead reminds us of the importance of preserving our shared heritage and sacred landscapes for future generations. Support Sacred Earth Activism and Stonehenge Alliance in defense of these ancient sites, speaking out against the threats that seek to erase the footprints of our ancestors from the sands of time. In honouring the spirits of Blick Mead, we honour the spirit of resilience and reverence that binds us to the land through time.
